Can I use an SATA III in my SATA successfully?

I was curious if I could put the newest Samsung 850 Pro (SATA III) in my "Late 2011 15" Macbook Pro" I have 16Gb of RAM installed and run a 2.4 Ghz quad core I7 The current stock hard drive is an SATA. I was wondering if I installed the 850 pro ...will I get all 550MB of speed out of the HD ....will it run optimally? Thank you guys! 🙂

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Your MBP supports SATA-3, so your 850 Pro will not be throttled by the Mac controller. The stock hard drive is also SATA-3, and probably the 750GB 5400 rpm model. Optimally, will depend on how “compatible” Yosemite considers your third-party SSD, and if you try to do something other than Yosemite's CoreStorage Logical Volume configuration.
