Early '11 Macbook Pro slow and constantly crashing (esp. in native apps like preview and iTunes) - EtreCheck attached

I've been noticing a drastic decrease in performance in my MP in the last few months... especially in apps like preview and itunes, even system preferences.

I see a lot of reds in the EtreCheck report... 😟 Can someone give me a summary of what I can do to take care of this? Is it just a matter of needing to upgrade RAM and potentially up the hard drive to an SSD? Would that take care of the issue or is it something more sinister?

Thanks!

I've got the same issue on my early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" i7 quad core w/special order hi-res display (pre-retina) 8gb OTC ram w/500gb OTC Electra 6G SSD and the whole laptop sits upon a dual fan Targus cooling platform.

Unfortunately, Apple no-longer honors the recall so I'm S.O.L.

I had AppleCare Plus on it but that ran out, too.

The problem just began happening to my Mac.

First, my elgato Thunderbolt Dock stopped showing up? The laptop would work on it's own (but without the Thunderbolt dock, I'd lost my 3-USB3 ports).

But then, even the laptop started getting the same scrambled screen then either restarting or bringing up the login screen?

The thing is, it doesn't do this in a consistent manner? Sometimes it works for an hour or more with no problems and other times it does it before it finishes booting?

So far, I've called Apple and we reset the PRAM but this had no effect. I was nicely told it is my problem and no longer Apple's.

I had at least hoped to learn which part(s) they'd replaced when they'd honored the recall but no joy there, either. If I new what parts fail to cause this, I'd at least know which to look for replacements for.

The rest of the laptop works just fine. I've actually been able to get the Thunderbolt dock working, again.

I've read that some people found success by switching the display from the card to using the built-in display in the cpu. I only see that when my laptop isn't plugged in (since this is a power saving routine) but I can't figure out how to force this to work, all of the time? I understand this is much slower but at least it would work? Apple support couldn't help me with that, either.

Does anyone know of anyone that will support Apple hardware after Apple stops supporting it? Obviously, this would be a paid service which is just fine with me.

Any insights or suggestions would be appreciated. I understand Apple's position but I wish that when they drop support, they'd at least tell us how they used to fix these too common problems? From what I've read they must have repaired thousands that had this problem! It's probably a simple board swap? Easy enough for me to do since this is my Mac and I literally know it inside and out. I've already replaced the battery, memory, upgraded the HD to an SSD, upgraded it's USB (via Thunderbolt dock) to USB3 and kept it's interior clean. Until now, it's run perfectly!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Others around here will sort out your EntreCheck report.

However you should be aware that there is a recall on this model.

https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues

Has the MBP ever frozen playing videos?

You should be aware of the issues while the recall is in effect and especially if it crashes while the GPU is stressed. You'll want that sorted out before the recall ends.

May 6, 2015 9:16 PM in response to grovestand

I suggest that you install at least 8 GB RAM in order to run Yosemite efficiently. Your MBP will recognize up to 16 GB RAM.

The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

I also recommend ridding the MBP of Google Chrome and its various parts. It has a history of compatibility issues with OSX. I use Firefox, Safari and Opera.

Ciao.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I just looked this thing up and can't believe how many people had problems!

Personally I've had some scrambled startup background (which strangely enough went away when I upped to Yosemite.). But the random restart is the one that jumped out at me - it's happened enough times for it to make me pause but not so much that I figured it was just my machine aging. But still, so very good to know about this! Taking mine to the store tomorrow to have it checked out.

Thanks so much!

Same here! I've got a15" early 2011 Macbook Pro, still running Mavericks, but having the same slowing issues, and while running native programs and seemingly "easy" applications. It seems to have gotten really bad lately. Running anything demanding - Photoshop, Illustrator - it's pretty painful. I've also had a display driver error pop up while running Photoshop, not sure if this is related to the recall or not? Anyway. AHT doesn't show any hardware is failing, and Disk Utility has nothing suspect. I'm in the same boat - more ram? SSD? Format and fresh install? I also read somewhere that migrating from Power PC to Intel-based can cause issues (although I did this 4 years ago now).

Sorry to highjack. Suppose I should start my own thread, but it's nearly a replica of what you're experiencing.
