I cant remember my screen passcode and have been locked out. My ipad says connect to iTunes. I have done that but i am not sure of this route because i have never used iTunes before. Can someone help me with a solution of gaining access without using the route through iTunes?

iTunes is probably the easiest way to restore your iPad and its passcode.
Thanks but I have never used Itunes before now. This means I cannot use this route because i cannot follow the stages outlined. Can you explain how i can be sure to have connected to iTunes?
Once you connect your device, iTunes will detect it and you will get an opportunity to restore it. All the steps you need to follow are on the Apple Support page I've given a link to. Read the article carefully.
You may also want to visit your local Apple Store, but you can restore your device yourself within minutes. That's much easier.
My attempts are stalled with the arrow pointing to Itunes on the iPad. Do I have to wait for long? Where will i get the message, On the iPad? Done three attempts and not knowing the way forward. Thanks for your time, Cohen
I am not sure my laptop is coming out right. I dont get the message about detecting a device in recovery mode even though the iPad is having the cable and arrow and iTunes logo as shown in the diagram. Are you still there
Try these steps. Note this will erase all the data from your device (and your passcode as well).

I don't think it will take much time, however, everything depends on the software and hardware you use.

I have been trying and i guess without success to download and install iTunes on my laptop. Is it possible to download and install iTunes on a Dell ipad? If yes, is there an icon or something to indicate if the installation was successful?

Your Dell laptop is running Windows or Ubuntu? If the first one, then you can download iTunes for Dell laptop here: https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
Make sure you choose Get iTunes for Windows.
I am really not good at this and thanks for your patience. I do not see Get iTunes for windows. Somewhere on the bottom left, i see download for Macintosh. I am running on windows.
Click on the 'Get iTunes for Windows' at the bottom and then on the 'Download Now' button.
I do not see where to click on 'Get iTunes for window', I only see the download. I have done that several times and the problem is i cannot say if i have successfully downloaded it.
Try to locate the downloaded file in your downloads. If you find it, you need to double click it and follow the instructions of the installer.
Done. How do i know if the download has been successful?
If the file is in the downloads folder and you can open it, this means the download was successful.
