display problems on external monitor

I am connecting a macbook pro with a new VGA cable to an external Dell monitor and the display is messed up. On the computer it does not fill the whole screen, and on the external monitor, it is either large and slightly out of focus, or stretched, if I choose the 1080. I used VGA cables before, without a problem. any advise? Thanks.
