How can I dismiss software update notification permanently

The notification of software updates can only be gotten off the screen, so far as I can tell, by selecting the option to be nagged at a later date, the latest date being the next day. This is really, really, really, really, really annoying. Is there a way to get rid of this nonsense permanently? I am getting this every time I boot into Mavericks because there is an iTunes 12 update on the Software Update list, which I do not intend to install. I have tried to hide the update, and that doesn't work.
