My ipad 1 has a black, non-responsive screen but will connect to Itunes on my laptop and will beep when plugged in to charge. I've tried a hard reset and it beeps but screen remains dark. Any troubleshooting ideas?

Have you tried restoring your iPad using iTunes:
Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
If you're unable to restore, then I suggest you make an appointment at a Genius Bar so that they can run a diagnostic on your iPad.
It sounds like the iPad is in DFU mode. Press and hold the power and home buttons. The screen should turn back on.
