How can I recover a single file from an old back up please ?

I can't seem to find a file from December 2014, but I know I have not deleted it, how can I recover it from my back up on my external drive ?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

If you are using Time Machine as the backup then simply open TM, navigate back to the when you know the file was OK and restore it. If you need basic instructions on TM, please click Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support and look in the Restoring data from Time Machine backups section.

Good luck.
