Message Emoji Pop Out Broken - does not register mouse clicks

When using the emoji pop-out (happy face next to the message box) I need to click a number of times (5 - 20x) on the same character for it to register. And sometimes I just give up after 3-5 seconds. Clicking on any other objects on the screen work as expected.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I've added a small MOV file to show what I mean and involves multiple tapping to get any response.

Hi,

The only thing I can see is that the cursor seems to be never steady.

When I checked mine to see if it had to be the outline that was clicked this is not the case - it can be anywhere within the icon shown.

Also when a group is selected the groups icon stays blue on my computer (I am using Yosemite though).

This question is posted in Mavericks but you say you are using Yosemite but not updated to the latest version.
