MAC Book Pro Model A1278

My friend was updating the operating system on her MAC Book Pro Model A1278 and it quit. Then after rebooting it stops on the screen shown in the attached picture. Sorry, I don't know what operating system version she was attempting to get to but this did occur around May 2, 2015. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
