My iPad 2 freeze up on me and has a lot of static in the music

OK for the last two month I have been having problems with my iPad 2,it freezes up on me, and a lot static in the music, and it shut off on its own.i don't know how often it suppose to up grade. I would appreciate if someone could walk me through fixing my iPad 2...thank you
