On my Mac Mini, Intel core i5, 1.4 GHz, I tried to log in to server software V4.0 in Yosemeti 10.10.1 to change some settings. The usual password would not permit access. Is this some simple oversight on my part ?

Verify that the password works, otherwise reboot and try again.
Check if there aren't any empty spaces in the username field present.
Otherwise you can boot into recovery mode and reset the password there.
