iCloud photo library slow upload

Hi,

Specs first

iMac 2009 running OS X 10.10.3, 4GB RAM 2.66GHz Intel core duo processor

iPhone 6 128gb

iPad Air 32gb

Sky Fibre Internet

speedtest.net verified download speed 25Mbps, upload speed 4Mbps

Wifi connection via Airport Extreme

Photos library 8200 images and videos totalling around 160GB

Upgraded iCloud subscription to 200GB to cater for upload of Photos library

Issue

I enabled iCloud photo library on my devices yesterday (using optimised photos option). It has been running for 18 hours now and the counter on my Mac says '8100 images remaining'. I have checked all updates are completed, repaired permissions, logged out and back in to iCloud and still progress is woeful, and to be honest that's being polite.

i've had to 'pause' the upload to write this message as it cripples my internet on all devices.

Checking cloudd network data in activity monitor shows 'data sent/sec' to fluctuate and max out around 5KB.

Disabled iCloud photo library on iPhone and iPad in case this was causing the issues. No joy.

Anyone got any tips or advice? I know there's a lot of data to upload, but at this rate my library will be synced in around 8888 hours, or 370 days!! I feel sorry for anyone who needs the larger storage packages!

A quick scan of the forums shows that a lot of people are experiencing this issue. Something is very very wrong.

The "Activity Monitor" was definitely the fix for me!!

I was having slow to no upload before, and now am uploading close to 2000 photos/ hour. I'll take it! Uploaded most of my 18,000 pic / 50 GB library overnight.

In case anyone else is still having this problem, here's what I did:

>"Launchpad"

>"Other"Folder

>"Activity Monitor"

>Click on the "Network" tab

>Sort by "Sent Bytes" column

>Force quit everything using sent bytes besides two processes that are accounted for by the cloud upload:
"cloudd" and "nsurlsessiond" should remain open

Took a second for my laptop to jumpstart the upload but its been going at a great speed since! For computer noobs like me also make sure to set your laptop so that it stays "awake" and therefore continues the upload even if it times out.

Do this by going to the >Launchpad >System preferences > Energy Saver > Drag computer sleep to "Never"

Thanks all for your helpful comments!

I also have the same problem, only now it's totally jammed on uploading and since this morning, it hasn't moved at all. I've got no idea what to do, I have tried everything and also after 3 days with all energy settings switched off, it has managed to upload less than 200 photographs.

All help out there gratefully received, although there seems to be many, many of us with the same issues.

Is it possible to just switch it off, revert back to iPhoto and try it all again in a few months when it's all sorted out? And if so, any idea on how we do that?

Many thanks

Lucy

Ditto.

Today have uploaded 200 images total! Still on 10,888 to go, from a total just over 18k - I started this process 2 weeks ago! 2 WEEKS!

At this rate I have around 2+ weeks left.

I also have increased iCloud storage to accomodate the large library. It's shockingly slow. Have left mac on for days on end with energy saver off (screen will turn off only) and still the upload is woeful.

Add to that, no ability to cherry pick which albums should be uploaded to iCloud - its all or nothing! I'm having to wait till the entire upload is complete before culling and properly organising images. I used to like to keep everything - but if this is the slow workflow then its time to do a massive cull.

Hello all,

I have exactly the same trouble : 24 hours to upload only 20 photos and i'm still waiting for more than 9000 pictures...

What should we do ?

That is strange, on my iphone is faster... i have wait during some days and then it was very very fast... (less photos)

and on my ipad (only some picutres 50) it was done in less than 12 hours...

I hope someone will find a solution

Hey Guys,

for me its like this:

I started iCloud Photos on the day 10.10.3 came out.

I had about 9000 photos in iPhoto.

I upgraded the storage to 200GB in iCloud.

The I started the upload an it seamed to be fine.

After some days some foots where uploaded an photos from my iPhone worked fine to.

Then the upload on the iMac stopped and never went up again.

Newer foots taken on the iPhone were uploaded fine and the already uploaded photos from the iMac were shown on the iMac.

But no new photo appeared on the iMac and the upload has completely stopped now.

When i stop the upload and start it again ist shows for a breif moment tha about 2000 photos has to be uploaded, but after a short time the number goes up to over 9000 an never goes down again.

Has anyone a solution for this?

My upload speed seams to be fine because i have no problem on the iPhone.

Sorry for the bad english, I'm from Germany

My bad. I take it you can't help me then?

Anyone? Any idea how we escalate this?

Progress update 7,998 photos remaining. Looks like its speeding up as its done 100 photos in the last 3 hours, compared to 18 hours for the previous 100.

I'm in the UK and going to bed now so I'll check it again in the morning... maybe it will be finished??
