Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011 Upgrade Options

Hello all,

I have a Early 2011, 13-inch MacBook Pro. This model has the 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 and 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory (Both factory installed).

I recent began running a dual screen setup with it and it struggles with this task. I don't use the MBP for anything more than email, internet surfing, and Netflix.

I want to upgrade the RAM and the Hard Drive to a SSD, but I do not know what to buy. What do you recommend as far as specific RAM sticks and HDDs to upgrade with? As far as capacity, I really would not need more than 250GB of HDD storage.

Thanks,

Ray

The memory can be upgraded to as much as 16 GB, be sure to buy the memory from a reliable quality source such as OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com as both have excellent service and lifetime warranties. OWC also offers both hard drives and SSD for that model MacBook Pro so take a look at what they have. All products OWC and Crucial sell are tested and guaranteed to work in a Mac.

So this is exactly the MBP that I'm on right now.

I upgraded the RAM to 8 GB from OWC:

The reason I only did 8 GB was budget and looking at these benchmarks:

and because I wanted the most increase in speed for my money which would be the installation of an SSD:

I put in the 120 GB but on retrospect could have afforded the 240 GB.

Here's how it's running now. I'm still on OS 10.9.5 Mavericks because of what I've seen around here:

Notice I've got 4 desktops and many windows open.
