Old ipod Trying to update

I have found my old ipod touch it is still on ios 2.2, i am trying to update it through itunes, in which i updated the new version i have tried everything that apple support has given and still it doesnt work, it keeps saying error (1), the ipod is in great condition and i would like to start using it again , Any help accepted.

I believe that was at the time when iPhone OS (it was originally called iPhone OS before it became iOS) updates were still a paid upgrade. The easiest way to update your iPod would be to download the .ipsw file (the operating system package) and manually update it (since Apple no longer sells the older iPhone OS upgrades).
