external monitor for powerbook g4

I have an "old" PowerBookPro G4 that runs dual OS9 and OSX. I think it is a 2006 model.

The screen has gone bad for the 2nd time. I had it replaced once but after a few more years the screen started going out again.

There are colored vertical lines and some white blocks that appear on the screen. The colors have gone from millions to hundreds, visually.

The HD appears to be functional.

I need to get this machine operable again. It has some legacy OS9 software and files that I still need and now cannot access or open.

My plan is to get an external monitor and hook up the PBP to it. What is the best type of connection type to do this? USB? Firewire?

Any suggestions as to monitor and getting that Mac working again would be appreciated.
