Can our apple tv play a movie that is already purchased when we are not connected to the internet. Example: We have a movie we want to watch on our outdoor projector in the country where we can't get wifi. Can we do this if the movie is already downloaded?

Unfortunately the Apple TV does not have user accessible storage so there would not be any way to download a movie to the Apple TV. If you have the 3rd generation Apple TV as well as a new iPhone or iPad running the latest software, download the movie to the iPad and AirPlay the movie to the Apple TV. The new Apple devices can use AirPlay over bluetooth and does not require a wifi connection.

So then it would be easiest to just download the movie to my ipad or macbook that we already have in our itunes library and hook the ipad up to the projector?
Or use AirPlay from the Mac or iPad to the AppleTV if you have access to a WiFi network. But otherwise, yes.
It would more than likely be easier to just hook the device up to the projector.
