I need an app to get me about in the UK using turn-by-turn directions via voice, preferably off-line I've been searching for this ever since I got a new iphone 2 weeks ago. I cannot find such an app - WHY? Can you help?

Google Maps will do what you want. It has an offline mode where it will download your route in advance. And it's free. There are also paid navigation apps, but the good ones are pretty expensive.

Apple's Maps application will do what you need it to do. If you are not a fan of Apple's Maps then you can try Google Maps. Both have voice turn by turn navigation for waking and driving.

Sygic claims it has a pedestrian mode, as does Garmin's app, motion x GPS drive and a host of others. And I believe those three all include preloaded, or the ability to download/cache and preload maps for offline use. If you search online for "iPhone navigation apps with pedestrian mode" there seem to be at least 25 or more apps listed or reviewed.

In the app, before entering a destination, tap the menu icon in the upper left. Then tap Tips and Tricks. You'll find instructions for "View maps offline".
