clicking Finder icon in Dock opens unexpected directory

In Finder preferences, I have the "New Finder windows show" option set to open a window showing my computer (with all of the mounted volumes).

If I open a new Finder window with cmd-n, then the new window opens correctly, showing my computer.

However, if I open a new Finder window by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, it shows a directory in my user folder (that happens to be the directory for a command-line app I have installed).

Also, the system does not remember the window settings (size, shape, location etc.) for Finder windows opened from the Finder icon in the Dock--they open to the default size/shape in the center of the screen every time.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Do a backup.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
