When clicking desktop in finder iPhoto opens. Not able to use desktop

When desktop is clicked in Finder, iPhoto opens. Unable to save to desktop. I tried removing the shortcut to desktop and replacing it but it still doesn't work.

It's not really clear what is happening. Please test in the Guest User or create a new User in System Preferences.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups.

Switch to the New User by logging out under the Apple in the Menu bar.

You can skip signing up with an Apple ID.

Only default Apple apps will be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open other apps you might want to test.

Do you still see the issue?

Once we determine if it's in your User's folder we will discuss options to fix. The more details you provide the easier it will be to understand your problem.

Great. Now we know it's a problem in your User's folder. Have you restarted in Safe boot mode?

Safe boot

* shutdown

* start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound

* after the sound, press and hold down the shift key

* keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears

* now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)

* eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT

* continue to loginwhile in safe boot mode.

* open Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities

* run Repair Permissions

Please verify what version OS X. Your sig show 10.7.5

Please give exact details on how to reproduce. Screen shots would help.

Explain exactly where you are clicking to make the problem happen.

Are you clicking in a Finder window or on the actual Desktop?

You mentioned a Desktop alias. Why are you using an alias?

Screen shots help.

Command-Shift-3 takes the entire screen

Command-Shift-4 takes a portion of the screen. <--use this one

Be careful not to include any private information.

It's late so any reply from me will be tomorrow.

The Finder link to Desktop still opens iPhoto but the screen shot was saved to the desktop. I'm still in Safe Boot.

Go to your User's Library folder. The User's Library folder is hidden by default. To unhide: Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.

Scroll down to Preferences.

Delete the following preference files then restart your Mac and test.

com.apple.finder.plist

com.apple.recentitems.plist

com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Let me know if this helps.
