My mid-2012 macbook pro gets very slow when using finder to manage photos from an external hard drive.

While copying photos from an external hard drive, Finder will get very slow and start highlighting items(file names) that I'm not working with. The computer has even become completely unresponsive which made me force a shutdown. I also have an AirPort Time Machine which I believe is no longer backing up the computer. I cannot see the Airport TM from the Disk Utility. I have data fro EtreCheck if needed.

2.6 GHz Intel Core i7

OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3
