That means the operating system or some of its files is damaged and needs repair or reinstallation:

Thanks Ralph.. this computer is one I bought a few years ago on an auction.. I have no startup disc so I guess Its toast..
Not necessarily - if it is a few years old it probably predates Lion so you need a physical install DVD. You can get one from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE and give them the serial number from the back of the computer and they will send you a replacement OS X install disk for around $20. You can use that to reinstall the operating system.
