Q: VISA check card - credit versus debit?

Does anyone know how a VISA check card is handled in Apple Pay?  I use one all the time that is tied to my checking account and seldom use the debit option.  All my purchases are via the credit option, but that has to be selected at the terminals after swiping.  How is this handled in Apple Pay?

Credit/Debit does not apply when using Apple Pay, you will use your Touch ID (or Apple Watch) and finish the transaction. There is no signing, enter PIN, or anything.

That doesn't appear to be the case in all uses.

When using Apple Pay at my grocery story, their terminal requires the entry of the card's pin.

Thank you.  But what is the default use set to in Apple Pay?  When using a VISA check card the default always seems to be debit at a terminal.  The terminals require you to do something specific to change the transaction to credit.  How is that handled in Apple Pay?

I'll ask again, at which grocery store? It should not require a PIN.

This is a local chain of four stores.  I was impressed that they had even heard of Apple Pay much less were trying it out.

I called them today and was told that their terminal (i.e. swipe) vendor, who captures the card data, encrypts it and then forwards to their clearing house vendor, had said that they would "upgrade" their system in the near future.  This "upgrade" would eliminate the PIN prompt.  Since I asked, they were going to contact their vendor again to get more specifics.  I will post the detail once received.

That explains the PIN requirement, if their terminal vendor corrects the situation it should not request a PIN. After that the question of whether it is being run as debit or credit is meaningless.
