My start up disk is full and I need to remove files but when I go to all files - all my photos are there and I don't want to remove them. What files can I remove safely

My start up disk is full and I need to remove many files. when I go to all files I am unsure what files I can remove safely without deleting all my photos. Even in the photos there seem to be several copies (each with different file extensions) of the same photos How do I know which ones belong where so I can decide to delete or not?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Do NOT use the All My Files view to delete items.

Start by deleting Downloads.

Delete the Trash

Open iPhoto and empty iPhoto's trash.http://www.macworld.com/article/1150849/empty_iphoto_trash.html

How much free space is left? Open Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities to get available space.

Do you have an external drive? You need to be able to copy files you want to keep like your Photos and Music. It's best to move large items. Usually your iTunes and iPhoto libraries are two large files that can be moved to an external drive. You can set the apps to use them in their new location.

Moving small individual files will not get you back the space you need.

If you have the space, download OmniDiskSweeper. This link requires requires OS X 8 or higher. If you are running an older version OS X, you will have to search for the old link. This free app is great for finding your large files so you can delete or move.
