Is there a way to completely blank out sorting?

This seems to be new in the latest version of iTunes because I've been organizing my iTunes content the same for years and it's never been a problem. It's causing artist names to duplicate because the sorting in the sorting tab isn't the same and I don't want to take the time to organize that way, if I try to delete and leave it completely blank, then exit and go back into get info, it just fills itself out again. I've been through all the menus and don't see a way to turn the sorting option off. Also when you select more than one song and it says mixed, if you try to delete and leave that blank, it just snaps back to mixed, is there a way to change that as well? I like to remove all the info except for song title to fill it in myself, it's just what I've done since I've been using iTunes.
