Q: When I follow this prescribed method to move to a new hard drive, the network sees it with the same name as the machine it was copied from.

New machine was named Mac Pro, but it shows on network as Mac Mini, same as the old machine the files were copied from.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    New machine?

The article is for moving your Time Machine backup to a new drive.

but it shows on network as Mac Mini, same as the old machine the files were copied from.

As it should. The files on the Time Machine are backed up from your Mac mini.

What exactly are you trying to do?

    New computer?

Move your Time Machine backup of the Mac mini to a new hard drive?

Start a new Time Machine backup for your Mac Pro?

I have a "new" computer. I want my files and apps to move over to this computer, but I also want to use the other computer. I have given them unique names ("Mac Mini" and "Mac Pro") but they seem to show as the same computer. The cloud backup recognizes both as the same computer. Apple TV shows them both as "Mac Mini." Other devices (such as iPad) on the network see them both as "Mac Mini." I am putting a new drive into the Mac Pro, so I may have a second chance to set it up a different way there. Time Machine is actually working for both computers independently, as the Time Machine drive is a directly connected USB drive. I would be okay with going to Mac Mini and wiping it clean (as all my files are on the new computer and backed up with Time Machine in two places and on the cloud) and setting it up new if that is the only way to solve the problem, but I thought there might be something simple I am overlooking. Thanks!
