Safari faulty after removing adware virus

I stupidly found myself downloading Mackeeper by mistake and screwing up my Macbook pro (old one, 10.7.5 I think, bought in January 2012). However, after searching on Apple discussions I managed to remove all the adware and Mackeeper remnants using a programme called AdwareMedic. BUT, since then, my computer has been still very slow, and Safari (which is particularly slow) won’t remember any of my preferences. For example, I ask it to keep my homepage as http://www.bbc.co.uk - and it keeps this in my preferences list - but never ever starts up Safari with that particular website. Only ever shows my list of favourite websites, and I can’t seem to clear those. I also did a Disk Repair check using Disk Utility and it tells me my disk is damaged - possibly as a result of the adware - but I don’t seem to have any sort of in-built recovery (OS Recovery) software on my computer to enable me to fix it. Lots of problems! But the first thing I’d like to sort which is affecting me on a daily basis is the Safari problem. Thank you in advance!

I have run an Etrecheck in case that's helpful

If Disk Utility is reporting that your disk is damaged, most likely your hard drive is failing and will need to be replaced. You can try repairing the disk according to dominic23's instructions, but backups will be of utmost importance at this point! If the drive is failing - and, with modern drives, it probably is if it managed to get damaged - it could die completely at any time and take all your data with it.
