Can I recover iMessages from a iphone that is lost?
i Need to get a hold of old iMessages that were on a. iPhone that was recently lost.
can I recover these messages without the actual iPhone itself?

If you have a past backup of the lost phone in iTunes or iCloud you can restore the backup to a new/other phone and whatever messages were in those backups will be restored to the newly synced device.
There is no way to get them from Apple and I'm 99% positive signing into another device with the Apple ID of the lost device will restore old messages.
