mailq reports system is down

I'm getting the following error when checking mailq:

postqueue: fatal: Queue report unavailable - mail system is down

This happens shortly after I try to 'mail' a bunch of messages.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Took me way too long to figure out that postfix was dying...

    $ sudo postfix status
    postfix/postfix-script: the Postfix mail system is not running

Starting it did the trick...

    $ sudo postfix start
    postfix/postfix-script: starting the Postfix mail system

Why did it die?

Are you running OS X Server? If not, how did you set up Postfix?

As noted, this is on a Mac Book Pro with OSX 10.10.3. I followed this guide to get postfix gmailing: http://mhawthorne.net/posts/postfix-configuring-gmail-as-relay.html
