I'm trying to install mountain lion on an external hard drive so I can run a lesser os x to play earlier games but because I have Yosemite it won't let me is there anyway around this

Your MBA came with Mavericks (10.9) installed and will not operate with an earlier OSX. Mt Lion is 10.8. If you have an older Mac, that came with Mt.Lion or earlier, then it would work.
