Q: IOS 8.3 sound problems Iphone 4s

I have recently updated my Iphone 4 s & it has killed all my sounds apart from through headphones or voice memos.

There are no alert tones at all ie no text message tones no ring tones no keypad tones no email tones. None of my music will play through the speaker.

If I record a voice memo it will play through the speaker.

The volume bar goes up & down ok. It is not in silent mode. It is not in headphone or dock mode.

I have erased & restored it 3 / 4 times. I have reloaded 8.3 via Itunes.

Please someone help as my phone might aswell be a paperweight for what good it is at the moment.

I had my iPhone at the Genius Bar yesterday (for a battery problem).  The Genius suggested the problem was debris in the connector and cleaned out a lot of crap for me.  It didn't fix it.  The sound keeps coming and going for me.

    Hi

for a short term fix i went to apple tv and clicked it on.

my sound bar came back and so did the ability to adjust it.

However it changes back on the odd occasion.

There are plenty of other issues too. Turn the phone off and it will turn on by itself.

I have the same problem and don't see why I should ditch my iphone4s. It's a software problem which Apple should sort!  I've cleaned the port and done a factory restore. Can still on hear text alerts through headphones.

I had the same problem with my 4s until I read somewhere in these posts that a dirty (headphone) connector may be involved - I had an unrelated problem, where my iPhone connected through the Apple connector to my car stereo would skip to the next song, every time I hit a bump in the road (that's when you realize how many bumps there are in the roads...) - very aggravating while you are in your favorite song! As I have my iPhone in my pocket all the time, I realized that with time lint settles in the connectors and prevents the connector to engage properly. Cleaned the connector carefully with a toothpick to get the lint and dust out, and voila - I can enjoy my music again without skipping a beat!

But I digress... So today, I took a professional electronic contact cleaner spray (I'm fortunate enough to work in a company where we have this stuff around) and sprayed it into both the Apple connector on the bottom and the headphone connector on top, and low and behold the problem was gone. So much for the theory that it is an Apple OS software bug... after all the 4s has been around for a long time and chances are your's got dirty too and just needs a good cleaning!

Anyway, if you try this, make sure you use a NON-CONDUCTING, RESIDUE FREE, professional contact cleaner, and don't overdo it, or have your Geek squad do it. You don't want to spray anything in there that shorts out your phone's electronics and causes more harm than good.

Good luck! I hope you all get your sound back

Helpful response. I have cleaned out the connectors too and my iPhone has worked fine for 3 days and long may it continue!

Guess I spoke too soon. Problem is back. Speaker works when replaying voice mail, but no sound on video, either taken with the phone or from online video content... :O(

    Still searching for a solution...

I have this exact same problem.  I am posting in the hopes that Apple will see how many are having problems.  I just had my phone to the repair shop and they can't fix it either.

As I said before, a dirty charging port seems to be the issue ( there over 30 pins and they short out when grubby) however, my iphone sounds have just gone again after gentle cleaning. This time as a last resort, after turning my phone off, I stuck a razor blade (carefully) down the port on the sides with pins  into the molding (not too far) and this seems to have dislodged whatever dirt/fluff/grease was causing the problem. This could however RUIN your iPhone for good.

    Well blow me down...

    iOS 9.2 FIXES THIS ISSUE!

I just updated to 9.2 and sound / sound bar works as it should.

I'd given up on Apple thinking they couldn't give a toss about iPhone 4/4s.

I take it back Apple, thank-you for finally fixing the sound on my iPhone 4s
