How to change DPI in Keynote - works 100%.

It is not possible to change the DPI's on Keynote, BUT there is a simple solution to set the DPIS you want on an image via the Preview app.

Keynote exports PDF's with 300 dpi, and JPG/PNG/TIFF with 72 dpi.

So if you want to create a Image with 300 dpi via Keynote, here are the simple steps:

1º Export your work to PDF from Keynote - it automataclly will set the resolution to 300 dpi.
2º Open the PDF file on the Preview app

3º File, Export, Image, JPG, (best quality). Now the JPG that was created has automatically 300 dpi.

If you want to change the DPI's of this JPG, just open it with the Preview app and go to Tools, Adjust Size, Resolution and set the number you want.

I just made this topic with this name because I believe lots of people are searching with that exact terms.
Voilá! 🙂

Keynote does not use dpi at all. Keynote is a video based presentation tool, it uses pixels to set image resolution.

Dots per inch (dpi) is the measurement of ink droplets used to creat a single dot on physical media measured by the inch.

Video has no concept of what an ink dot is or what inches are. Therefore dpi is a function only used when printing to physical media, it has no bearing in video applications.

The way to change image resolution in Keynote: Inspector > Document > Document > and select Custom from the Slide Size drop down menu

No it does not. PDF files are exported from Keynote in pixels, dependant on what pixel resolution is set in the document inspector for a specific slideshow.

When using Keynote, it is only a printers driver software that calculates a dpi value for a specific printer at a specific page size for the resolution the printer can print.

Even if the DPIs are not those said in the first post there is a clear difference in exporting as PDF or TIFF (respectively the first and the second image attached).

What I would like to know if does the size of the slide in pixels matter at for the resolution of the PDF. I want to save the picture as a PDF and then export them as TIFF since from adobe you have that option and can specify the DPI. I had a 2048x1400 image and when I follow this process I get 200 MB and enormous resolutions. Should I start with a smaller slide size? and would that impact my resolution?

Thanks,
Pietro

The Keynote slide size determines the resolution of any type of file exported from Keynote; PDF, TIIK JPEG.

The Higher the pixel count, the higher the file size and the higher the definition will be.

The aim is to balance, pixel count with file size to achieve a desired resolution for the end product.

If your exporting to TIFF as the end product from Keynote where're does Adobe come into it?

A 2048x1400 pixel slide size with one slide in Keynote should result in an exported TIIF of around 11MB file, your obviously have more than one slide in Keynote.

Scott, hi.

You are giving a lot of correct and interesting information, but you are missing the problem that we are having.

It used to be that you could export a TIFF file from Keynote that had a high resolution. The color depth was horrid, but at least the resolution was decent.

Now, a TIFF file export comes out so poor that 2 taps on the + key in Preview and it is breaking up...that is, creating stairs out of the fonts and circles. If you were going to blows these up for large screen use they are unusable.

The workaround was to export to PDF and open that file in Preview, then export that to TIFF. The results are usable depending on some unknown factor. The other day I was able to set the pixels per inch to 450 and get a terrific file for my workflow to a cinema projector. 600 would crash the system. Today I try 450 and get half images – the filesize is right, but half the image is black~! Today I can get output of 200, but 300 won't work. Odd. But 200 will pass.

What we want – if I read the OP correctly – to is get a high resolution TIFF files from Keynote. It would be great if they were 12 bit which is the SMPTE standard, but blah blah blah, consumer program, blah blah. Automator doesn't seem to do it either.

But thanks for the clues.

I just tried your suggestion of making the document bigger. I had been at 2048 x 1080, and went to 4096 x 2160.

Exporting to TIFF not only gave me the immediate stairsteps (pixelating) on size increase, but any time there are two boxes put together, for example a patch of 95% black and 90% black, each square also got an outline of 1 pixel of a different shade of gray. So, the technique of larger document size doesn't work.

This post is not about the problem you are having, which is a bug introduced in the latest version of (Keynote version 6.6) that limits the exported images pixel size. This is a well discussed subject in the Keynote discussion, Apple are aware of the problem and I would expect them to fix this in a future update.

The topic under discussion here, relates to using Keynote version 5.3, there is no bug in this version causing reduced pixel size.

The subject being discussed in this thread is: "how to set the dpi in Keynote" using Keynote version 5.3.
