Have you tried rebooting your device?
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If that does not work:
Settings --> General --> Reset --> Reset All Network Settings

I have tried that before and now and it never worked after iOS 8 came out. Stupid Apple. Make a port of iOS 6 to this device!
We are just volunteers, we do not work for Apple. I highly doubt Apple will release a newer version of iOS for the 3rd generation iPod. What I would suggest doing is restoring the device in iTunes.

I have tried that over 100 times before and it never worked.
That never worked for me. It might be doing that because Apple's servers for iMessage no longer support iOS 5 or lower.
Or apple might be trolling us.
