crashing

Hello, I'm grateful for any insight. I have a 27 inch late 2009, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, and ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB, running yosemite.

I'm experiencing frequent crashing and glitches when using photoshop. I'm guessing from what I've been reading that it's the graphics card- but wondering how I would clarify that? Also if it is this is there anyway of replacing it myself if it is... - horrible question I know, but I've been ill and unable to work, so, yes, no money.

Thank you and I can add more information if needed.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

That does look like a bad graphics processor, though the logic board might be at fault. The machine is too old to be serviced by Apple, unless you happen to be in California, but they might at least be willing to test it for you at an Apple Store. There would be no charge for that service. If the GPU is confirmed bad, you might be able to replace it yourself, if you're mechanically inclined and you can find the part on a website such as ifixit or powerbookmedic. They would also have installation guides. Whether all this is worth doing for such an old unit wasn't the question.

Hello Linc,

Following many iMac crashes these last weeks, I browsed through the community topics and found your instructions to sort out information about my crashes.

I have indeed messages with the "kernel" word, but not ".panic" when i type it into the research window of Console.

At some point the mouse does not trigger anything. All is blocked except the mouse. Nothing is "clickable" anymore. I let the computer that way for minutes, hours, but nothing came up again. Hard shut down. And this happened many times in weeks, recently.

What I have noticed is that each time it happened while i was browsing through Safari. As if a number of clicks of the mouse, or a number of clicks of the mouse into Safari's window, or a number of new Safari's window would trigger it.

Thank you for your time and advice.

Best regards.

Lionnel
