Please give opinions on what size Apple watch to buy

I stopped by an Apple Store today to look at Apple watches. They would not show a watch unless I was willing to provide personal information about myself; which of course, I refused to do. ( I guess they are worried about a crook running out the door with it. ) So, I was limited to just looking through the showcase.

I think I want to get the stainless steel Link Bracelet shown below.

My problem is this. I am struggling whether I should get the 38mm or 42mm, ( a little surprised to see that this band adds about $450-$500 to the base price.) 😮

Originally, I had assumed that the 38mm was for women, and the 42mm for men. I'm a 5'-9" average build man. Looking at the watch through the glass case the 42mm looks huge.

Hoping some people that actually have the watch already could express a useful opinion. Thanks !!

I saw a guide based on holding a credit card along your wrist. It proved pretty true for me. I was in group B and went with the 38mm and was pleased with the look. As a disclosure I am a woman so that may have influenced my preference for the smaller size not wanting it to look too mannish. I tried on the 42mm at the store (by appt. on Apr 10th) and thought it looked too big on my wrist.

Take out your credit card and lay it the long way across your wrist. So that the numbers are vertical, going up and down your wrist.

A. Your wrist literally disappears under the credit card

B. Your wrist matches or just a tad smaller, or just a tad larger.

C. Your wrist is much larger than your credit card but at least 8-10mm or more

If you got A Then there's no way the 42mm is going to look great on you... in short, it will look like a toy is on your wrist.

If you got B Your special! Like me! You can choose! Now here is the dilemma... Do you want the "Smart Watch" look or do you want a traditional "Watch" look. The 38mm definitely is well proportioned. On the other hand, the 42mm is definitely a smart watch look. For those early adopters of smart watched that have an original pebble watch it looks like this (42mm) One thing though... If you pick the 38mm you might find the screen smaller, and want to **** over the 42mm. Don't let this discourage you! after playing with a 38 MM size watch you get really used to the size of the screen very fast! This is when you have to prioritize what you want more. Looks? (38mm) or do you want function/screen size, and possibly better battery life and don't really care that it screams "Smart Watch"

And finally if you got C The small 38mm will look tiny, go for the 42mm you'll be happy of the screen size, and possibly the battery life!

Other people's opinions don't mean anything.

Sure they do. That's why American businesses spend billions of dollars each year gathering customers opinions. In fact, Apple has asked for my opinion many times.

Apple already has all the "personal" info

True enough, but they don't know who "I" am. Anyway, I am happy to work around this issue.

If anyone else has a "opinion" about sizes I would be interested to hear it.

Buy the 38mm Sport model. 38mm is perfectly fine unless you have unusually large wrists (or like big watches for fashion/style reasons). I looked at the two regular watches I used and both were smaller than 38mm (and round, but I don't mind the rectangular shape of the Apple Watch), though one was only a fraction smaller.

Buying the stainless model is nuts as far as I'm concerned, it costs hundreds more for a watch that does nothing more than the Sport model and will be obsolete just as quickly. The Sport looks fine on my wrist (I bought the silver with white band, I've a black Sport band on order. My biggest complaint is that Apple don't offer the silver Sport watch with black Sport band) and if you are really keen spend the extra bucks for the Milanese loop band or whatever. There's at least a chance the bands will fit subsequent models, but the watch itself will be replaced by a better one in 12-18 months and a still better one a year or so after that.

That's my opinion, you asked for it.

My opinion: until you try it for yourself, you won't know which one you prefer.

Hi Meg,

I understand the point that you are making. However, I may be limited to looking at the watches my friends have purchased. Interestingly, all these people purchased their Apple watch without being able to try them on.

On several occasions, people have asked me if they should purchase an iPhone 6, or an iPhone 6 Plus. I tell them the iPhone 6+ is too big. I recently went through a home-building process, we spent serious money with an interior designer that specializes in modern architecture. So in essence, I spent many thousands of dollars for "opinions"! 🙂

To be frank, I am considering the smaller watch. I was hoping to hear from other men that have the smaller version to see if they are happy with that decision.

Thanks, I am thinking of getting a 38 mm size also. I agree with your points regarding the band. And I have wondered if there are aftermarket ways of doing this for lower cost. I just like the dressier look of the stainless steel band. I haven't yet figured out how one determines the appropriate size for stainless steel band.

Appreciate your comments.

Obviously you need to try one on to decide. But I feel pretty strongly that any guy should get the 42mm model. Its smaller than you think. I am 5'10" with pretty small wrists and I wouldn't want anything smaller. Not to make the decision more complicated, but the stainless steel model is also heavier than you think. With the classic leather band, its a bit top heavy. I agree that the stainless link band is by far the best looking one for a man. The link is heavy too, so it should offset the weight of the watch. So I guess I'm saying if you want to go heavy with the stainless, then go all in. Or if money is a concern, get the black sport band. That one is comfortable and should give you a nice fit to help keep the watch snug so it doesn't feel as top-heavy. My classic leather band is either a bit too tight or a bit too loose. That's why the have two loops available, so they are infinitely adjustable. I just don't like the look of either of those.

Thanks for the credit card method! I've already purchased mine (38mm SS Milanese Loop), and my decision was confirmed by coming in firmly as an A in the credit card test. I did try the watches on at an Apple Store, and am very happy I did, because I was going to get a 42mm Milanese Loop. I learned by trying it on that the loop band for the 42 mm is so big that it would not close tightly around my wrist. Same with the leather loop bands -- I do like the look of the blue leather loop, but was out of the question because was just too big for my small wrist.

The credit card test is great advice -- I shall pass it along to my friends who are making this decision.
