Yes, the Apple Watch will track your indoor walk on a treadmill. You can help the accuracy of the Apple Watch by calibrating it, and also using the Indoor Walk workout in the Workout app.

no modifications. It will work just fine to record steps and heart rate, but your distance is tied to the GPS, so it probably wouldn't have a good estimate of your distance traveled. You would only want to tell the watch your about to do a work out before starting in the fitness tracking app.
