My late 2009 iMac is now seriously slow especially since downloading yosemiti. I am told the processer needs to be upgraded from i3 to i5,which cannot be done .Are Apple planning an upgrade in the foreseeable future?

Who told you that you needed to upgrade the processor? I hope you don't put a lot of your computer related decisions in their hands.

How much RAM do you have and how much free space do you have on the startup drive?

Other potential causes of slowness are any software you've installed to optomize, clean, maintain, or protect you. All such products are crapware and cause problems, not solve them.

Open Activity Monitor and look at the Memory Tab. What does the memory pressure graph show (Green, Yellow, Red). How about Swap Used?

    1. Memory 4GB  -  2 memory slots used,  2 available

    2. Activity monitor Memory Tab Capacity 499.25 GB

                                                      Free space  391.13 GB

                                                     Used 108.12 GB

The graph shows green, yellow in middle then green again.

    3. Avast Mail Shield installed

I hope this is of help.

    As already stated, dump Avast.

More RAM will always help. Buy it from a reputable source like Crucial, Other World Computing, MemoryTen, etc.

No matter which source you pick, use their memory finder for your specific Mac model.  Don't try to find RAM based on RAM specs.

Also make sure they certify it works with an Apple computer and warrants it for life.

Based he'd on your description, I can't find your Mac, here: http://www.everymac.com/#macspecs1

They have specs for all Macs and have links to memory suppliers in various locations.

You can find your exact Mac by opening System Information and looking for the model identifier. You can then search for that on the linked site or find it here:

I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Your current hardware should run very nicely with Yosemite and certainly no slower than it has done with previous versions of OS X. If it feels slow then suspect software and/or preferences lingering on from previous versions. If you run EtreCheck:

         http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

and post the results here we can probably help get it working well again.

Once the software has a clean bill of health you can look again at Activity Monitor and if, during your usual working pattern, it is spending most of its time in the green you don't need to spend money on RAM.

There are many posts on these forums advising people with 4GB and Yosemite to buy RAM. I can't remember ever seing a post saying 'Yep, the extra RAM fixed it.' but I've seen plenty saying 'I bought extra RAM and it made no difference.'

The enclosed report seems to be an abrievated copy of the etracheck.  The cut and paste to insert the full report into the square box edged green would not work. The report highlights in red  ' Problem System Launch Agents'  and also " Problem System Launch Daemons ". Thanks for your continued help.
