Q: No transaction data when using Apple Pay on the Watch

Unless someone knows more than the nice person on the other end of the chat at Apple, it turns out that when you use Apple Pay with the watch, no transaction data is stored.  I doesn't show up on the phone, and there's no place to look at it on the watch.  Evidently this is how it's designed.

This really bugs me.  I remember when Tim Cook (or was it Steve?) talked about Apple Pay, and how we'd have transaction data stored on the phone so we could see exactly what purchases were made and for how much.  Now we get the watch and that that data -- when using the watch -- goes away?  So, I guess I need to start requesting and keeping receipts for anything I pay for with the watch.

First rule of software design: Do the thing that surprises the user least.  Well, I was really surprised about this.  I hope they fix it quickly.

    Hi,

The idea with Apple Pay is to better protect your privacy and security, part of that is not storing permanent transaction data. You can of course view that history through your bank or financial institution. It's incorrect to say that no transaction data is stored because your financial institution will definitely have a record of the transaction as will the merchant, it's just Apple that doesn't store the data on their servers or on your device. Devices can be stolen or lost after all.

In a lot of ways this is no different then using your credit card as is, the obvious difference being it's not your credit card number being used for the transaction. What's at stake in your complaint here? Why do you want transaction history stored and available on your watch when you can get it from your financial institution? Are you just talking about recent transactions?

    Greetings,

It was Tim (Steve, sadly, was gone), and -- though I watched carefully (indeed, just re-watched just now, see below) -- they said just the opposite. Apple knows nothing about your transaction; they said so specifically.

Have you used Apple Pay on the phone?  I think you'd understand if you'd used it more than once or twice.

In Apple Pay on the phone, you see a list of your last ten transactions, who you paid, and the amount.  If you use the watch, you get nothing.  I want to be able to see the exact same data regardless of which device I use.  And there are some places I use the watch where no receipt is available, so having data stored where I can easily access it is nice.

No, Apple doesn't know anything about what you did, but the phone does store that data without sending it to Apple.

It's poor design to do one thing on the phone and something entirely different on the watch.

Sadly, no. I have only an iPhone 5s. Have to take your word for the functionality on the iPhone. Not having it on my 5s, I don't really have a position on the Watch functionality. Works for me just fine as it is, I use Mint to monitor my transactions, across the board.

Noticed the same issue. I agree it's a bug and should be fixed. It surprised me and I ended up having to check my CC statement to see what went through. I'm sure it will be fixed though.

    Not necessarily!

The amount of history you see on an iPhone, if any, is governed by the credit card issuer.

I am aware of one that only show the last one transaction.
