Do any of the following questions apply to your computer? Any one of them can cause slowdowns andor dodgy computing:

    1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?

    2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimizations" applications?

    3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?

    4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?

    5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?

    6) Did your financial institution ask you to install Trusteer EndPoint Protection (also known as Trusteer Rapport)?

    Hi Allan,

From all your questions I only use Avast.

    No to all other questions.

    No to all other questions.

Avast is likely the problem. Antivirus apps for OS X are a total waste of system resources and tend to create more problems than they solve. The reason they are a waste is there are zero viruses for OS X in the wild. However there is a small amount of malware out there that Avast will not help with and that can be easily avoided if you use a little common sense.

    The common sense is:

    • Never use a torrent site to download.
    • NEVER respond to an e-mail, phone call or ad advising that your computer is compromised, these are SCAMS!!!
    • Keep OS X up-to-date.

My recommendation is to find the Avast uninstall process and totally uninstall it and your performance will likely return to normal.

It is possible that Avast is the problem but if you were already running Yosemite and the slowdown occurred after installing the recent update, it could be a faulty update is to blame. When I suspect something went awry during an update I download the Combo Updater which Apple usually makes available at the same time the update goes live in the App Store. Click the link above for the 10.10.3 Combo Updater

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Again thank you all for helping me out with this.

I went ahead and installed the combo-pack update and it seems to have helped a little but but colorwheel still appears a lot on simple tasks with only Firefox open 6 tabs open just browsing...

I don't see anything terribly outstanding however I do see  you have a lot of third party apps installed. I would recommend going through each and ensuring each is up-to-date and is designed to run on Yosemite. The only app that has me concerned is Little Snitch, this app does have an occasional history of creating problems so if you no longer need it you may want to consider Trashing it.

Finally I noticed your machine has the AMD Radeon HD 6970M - VRAM: 2048 MB, are you aware of the:

I suggest booting into recovery partition (command R after restart) and then run disk utility and run disk repair. Also check SMART status while DU is running.
