Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac?

Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac. Have all the latest updates. Takes 10-15 minutes for my photos to load overtime I open the app. Frozen while they are loading. They are all on my computer. Not coming from the cloud.

I totally agree, Allan.

It us just sad, the updates page for High Sierra is very misleading. There should be a very clear warning, that 2GB Memory will not suffice, if users are planning to use the Mac for any software that will process media files.

macOS - How to Upgrade - Apple (UK)

General Requirements

  • OS X 10.8 or later
  • 2GB of memory
  • 14.3GB of available storage to perform upgrade*
  • Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
  • Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

Uninstall the Avast A/V software according to the deveoper's instructions: Avast Mac Security: Uninstalling Avast Mac Security. Avast is a waste of money and computer resources. It's down to slow down Macs. After removing it rerun Etrecheck to confirm that all files are gone and run for a bit to see what the performance change is.

Dropbox can also use up system resources. Take it out of the User Login Items and launch it only when needed.

Hello Again,

OK tried it all. In safe mode, very glitchy and slow and does somewhat what it is doing normally. In a new photo library-all is good and quick like it used to be. Signing in under a guest user also has no issues.

So it seems that it is just with the regular library and it has interesting things that happen-Like when I crop, it will have squares (enlarged portions of the photo) within the photo that take a while to go away. The wheel keeps turning and switching modes from crop to adjust and making adjustments tale a little longer...

Then theres the balance wheel at the bottom left while waiting for it to actually show up on the right where it needs to be...User uploaded file

Since it works correctly in a new library and in another user account with a different library that points to your current library as the culprit.

If you don't have the iCloud Photo Library enabled launch Photos with the Command+Option keys held down and repair the library. If you have the iCPL enabled this will trigger another complete upload of the library to iCloud.

If you want to try starting over with a new library with all of the photos in your current library follow these direction:

Starting Over From Scratch With a New Photos Library.

1 - launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new library.

2 - open your old library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:

User uploaded file

3 - locate the Master folder in the old library and drag it onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

User uploaded file

This will create a new library with the same Moments as the original library but will not include the added metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Once the import is complete verify that the new library has all of your photos and working properly before deleting the older, problem library.

macOS High Sierra10.13.1 (17B1003) - Time since boot: about 15 days

Reboot once or twice a week which will help clear out old cache and swap files. It will help speed up the Mac.

You can also uninstall Adobe Switchboard as it's obsolete software by Adobe and has been discontinued.

How long have you been running Photos and what version are you running. Photos does a lot of background processing in face and object recognition. If you've enable the iCloud Photo Library there will be a lot of background uploading of photos to iCloud. With a large library it can take a couple of weeks.

As already mentioned you can definitely use additional memory. I have the same model iMac and run 8 GB of memory and get no problems. I can only recommend Crucial.com for memory upgrades. They test their modules in each Mac model they are designed for. They also have excellent customer support and warranty policies.

Hi Old Toad,

I'm hoping you might be able to help me too. My iMac becomes terribly slow whenever I open the Photos app, and remains incredibly slow even after the app is Forced to quit. I was unable to run EtreCheck while it was open. But below is my EtreCheck that I ran after starting the computer up today prior to opening any apps. Should I remove Google Chrome? What about Sophos? I welcome any advice. Thanks!

In addition to Allan's recommendations boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and then reboot normally. Check to see if there's any improvement.

You're running the minimum amount of memory for the current system. I suggest you upgrade the memory to a minimum of 8 GB and more if your budget can accommodate it. The two most reliable sources of Mac memory are crucial.com and mac sales.com. Either get a couple of 2 GB modules to bring it up to 8 GB or 4 GB modules to bring it up to 12 GB. You will see an improvement in performance.

Also what are the settings in your Photos/iCloud preference pane? Post a screenshot of it. If you have the iCloud Photo Library enabled then Photos will work very hard behind the scenes uploading your photos to the iCloud server, identifying faces, etc. and will cause Photos to be slow for a while.

Nov 21, 2017 5:32 PM in response to LarryHN

Here is mine. The computer runs fine until I open Photos. Fans kick on and temp is 150 or so.

I don't see any of the usual suspects.

Try the following:

1 - as a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

2 - log into another user account on your Mac and see if Photos is as slow there or not.

3 - boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and check Photos performance there. Note: the boot into safe mode will be slower than normal as it performs some repair and cleanup operations during boot.

Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac?
