Q: Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac?

Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac.  Have all the latest updates. Takes 10-15 minutes for my photos to load overtime I open the app.  Frozen while they are loading.  They are all on my computer. Not coming from the cloud.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

this is also a forum to vent and express frustration with Apple's products.

No it's not.  The following is from Apple Support Communities Use Agreement:

    Submissions

    1. Stay on topic. Apple Support Communities is here to help people use Apple products and technologies more effectively. Unless otherwise noted, do not add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
      1. Speculations or rumors about unannounced products.
      2. Discussions of Apple policies or procedures or speculation on Apple decisions.
    2. Be polite. Everyone should feel comfortable reading Submissions and participating in discussions. Apple will not tolerate flames or other inappropriate statements, material, or links. Most often, a "flame" is simply a statement that is taunting and thus arbitrarily inflammatory. However, this also includes those which are libelous, defamatory, indecent, harmful, harassing, intimidating, threatening, hateful, objectionable, discriminatory, abusive, vulgar, obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit, or offensive in a sexual, racial, cultural, or ethnic context.
    3. Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Constructive feedback about product features is welcome as well. If your Submission contains the phrase “I’m sorry for the rant, but…” you are likely in violation of this policy.

This is your problem.  Yosemite requires a minimum of 4 GB of RAM to run efficiently on new Macs and for older Macs it's more like 8 GB to be effective.  You do not have enough RAM.

You model of Mac, an iMac9,1, can utilize 8 GB of RAM.  If you want to have any kind of reasonable performance go to Crucial.com and upgrade your memory to 8 GB buy purchasing two 4 GB modules for your particularly model.  The only other source for RAM that one can rely on is otherworldcomputing.com.

You've installed some very bad malware.  Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. You can do a Google search for them.  You can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

    1 - Name contains cleanmymac

    2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Also what are the problems that you're experiencing?  We need to know more than just the report info.  It looks like Photos is using up a lot of CPU resources.  How long have you been using Photos?  Do you have the iCloud Photo Library enabled?

Sounds like a different issue. Start a new thread and post an etrecheck report.

Apparently, even if you do have the photos on your local mac device, photos are uploaded to the cloud. There is no cache created on the computer for faster viewing. Every time you attempt to view a picture, you are downloading the photo from your iCloud library. Very different from way iPhotos worked!!!

Unfortunately, I did not save a backup prior to my upgrade to photos. I'm so disappointed in the performance of this application.

I just started using it over the last week and so far. I have had issues creating iCloud albums for photostream and the album being available on other devices. It seems to take hours to reconcile the new albums, for example if I create a new album on my Mac it isn't available on my phone for me to add pictures from my iphone or vice versa. I'm at a loss for words because now something that I had become fairly comfortable with doesn't work. This is essentially a beta test and I'm a guinea pig because I chose to update.

The thing that took me for a loop was the fact that I tried to create a slide show from pictures that I had recently taken and tried to show my family a preview and noticed latency while playing the slideshow, along with pixelation of high res pics that didn't come into focus before the slide show advanced to the next slide. I honestly thought that I had a virus or had some issue with my mac and contacted customer service. So if you had any intention of using slideshows and are using a high resolution jpg you'll need to find an alternative. I honestly don't know where to start and if it will give me the same ease of use as iPhoto. Instead of sharing the pics I'm stuck trying to figure out if I will have to pay for a 3rd party application or not. I guess that I have to look into something like photoshop now, which really wasn't my intention!!! Or another possible alternative, which might be a long shot, try to import from my camera into the old Aperture or iPhoto libraries.

Lesson learned?! Backup before you update!!!! I would go back to iPhoto in an instant, if I could.

Your Hard Drive is almost full. Transfer some larger files such as movies to an external drive.

Although not part of the slowness problem it is a deficiency in smart computing strategy.  With a proper backup you will lose some data eventually, whether it be a full disk crash for just disk corruption.

First launch Photos with the Command+Option keys held down and repair the library. Try importing again.

    Thanks OT,

I will give this a try once I can get the import to stop.  Seems like a not responding sort of thing.

I am not sure how long to wait.  Yesterdays attempt was pre-empted with a power outage so that helped.

seems to get stuck on 'closing the library'.

I have an external drive now too.  Will configure it as a 'time machine'.

I found 'force quit' when using option/command and it worked to close photo.  Library repaired, photos uploaded very quick.

Thank you very much.  I was starting to think our Mac was trying to turn into something less.  haha
