Aug 3, 2016 9:16 AM in response to sampleasampleby sampleasample,I mirrored my HD externally not too long ago, right before I "upgraded" to El Cap. Haven't added any pix since.
In any case, I cannot seem to repair the library even if I wanted to, all the command does is open the app.
BUT, Old Toad, overall the computer is running much much better. Not the Photos, but I will be happy with what I can get!!!!

Aug 4, 2016 4:52 AM in response to Old Toadby sampleasample,Ah. I guess I was not signed in when I thought I was. I was wondering why there was no reply button. (Duh.)
I tried to update my old 2010 iPhotos, figuring that might help but update no longer offered in App Store.
Is the bottom line a rebuild?
If I export all 32000 photos from iPhotos+Photos, can I then delete them from libraries and import? It seems no matter how many I delete, the size of the libraries does not diminish, so I suspect they keep info that I cannot get to.

Aug 4, 2016 6:47 AM in response to sampleasampleby léonie,Which version of iPhoto have you been using? Earlier iPhoto versions had a bad bug, that made it imossible to empty the iPhoto Trash, if there have been too many photos in the Trash.
In iPhoto you need to empty the iPhoto Trash, to free the storage, in Photos you need to empty the "recently Deleted" album.

Aug 5, 2016 11:14 AM in response to léonieby sampleasample,iPhoto is version 9.2.3, from 2010. I am not sure I was even aware that there was an iPhoto trash, so thank you.
I do not remember the last time I tried to trash something there, maybe in 2011, but not since. Working up enough energy to tackle this.

Sep 22, 2016 6:30 PM in response to Shannon864by ca.dreamn,You may have worked this out already and so thought to reply anyway since there was no fix-reply and for those who may be experiencing the same issue...
Experienced the same issue and so I found this at: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/04/16/how-to-import-pictures-into-photos-on-ma c/
AND IT WORKS… thank goodness. When you see the inconsistency, your like what?!? I kid-you-not!!!
You don’t need to download no app….!
Open up Photos and click on Photos up in the menu bar in the upper-left corner. Select Preferences and then uncheck Copy items to the Photos librarynext to Importing. Any photos you import into Photos will not be copied into your iCloud Photos library.
So finally, to import your pictures into the Photos app, follow these simple steps:
- Go up to the menu bar and click on File, then Import.
- Finder will pop up and from here you’ll navigate to where all of your photos are stored. You can simply just select the folder that your photos are in and then clickReview for Import.
- All of your photos will appear in a grid layout, and you can either then select specific photos to import or import all of them. To import a selection, simply just click on the ones you want and then click on Import Selected in the upper-right corner of the Photos window. To import all of them, just click on Import All New Items.
If you enabled iCloud Photos Library, it will take some time to sync all of your photos with iCloud and have them viewable on your other Apple devices. Otherwise, all of your photos will now be in the Photos app and you can begin to organize, edit, etc.
Verbatim… THANKS http://www.gottabemobile.com/

Sep 22, 2016 10:18 PM in response to ca.dreamnby LarryHN,uncheck Copy items to the Photos librarynext to Importing
This is a really, really bad suggestion and will cause you many problems in the future - if you do not want to use iCloud Photo Library then simply turn it off, no reason to create many future problems for no advantage by unchecking this preference - unchecking this preference creates a referenced library and no only does it not work with ICPL but Photos does not have the tools to make it work at all and you will have a giant mess on your hands
.
Best advice is - DO NOT UNCHECK THIS PREFERENCE EVER
