Q: Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac?

Why is the new Photos app so slow on my Mac.  Have all the latest updates. Takes 10-15 minutes for my photos to load overtime I open the app.  Frozen while they are loading.  They are all on my computer. Not coming from the cloud.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

The report has none of the obvious culprits.  However, older Macs like yours running Yosemite on only 4 GB of memory have a difficult time with performance.  Adding  additional RAM will help the performance issue. Your modle can utilize up to 16 GB of RAM.  8 GB should help.

Replacing the hard drive with a SSD drive will give you a big boost in performance, particularly booting up and launching apps.

If you up the RAM in the MBP I recommend you get the modules from Crucial.com or otherworldcomputing.com.  They guarantee that their modules not only meet the Apple specs but will work in the machine. They have excellent customer support and warranty policies.

Note:  Just want to make sure you included the entire Etrecheck report above, right?

Hello, Could someone help me out. It seems to take a long time for my photo to show up on my Mac when I take a photo with my iPhone. It takes 5 to 10 minutes to show up in Photos iCloud on the Mac. I kind of need it to be faster since I use it for listing items on Ebay. I have the base and bottom of the line Mac Mini. I understand that the RAM is probably the culprit. here is my info

Your issue is not the same as the OPs.  However, bottomline is that you meed more memory.    You're getting a lot of killed processes due to the lack of memory. Your model can utilize up to 16 GB of memory.  Go to Crucial.com or otherworldcomputing.com and purchase modules to get you to at least 8 GB ( more if the budget permits).

Those are the only two vendors that guarantee that their modules will work with Macs.

Also you are going to have a drive crash or corruption at some time in the future so you should seriously consider getting an external HD and using Time Machine to keep current backups

In the future it's best to start your own topic so you get the un-diverted attention of those visiting the topic.

Beside Peter's good point about insufficient free space, I would also recommend that your uninstall Trusteer. It has been my experience that causes far more problem then it does good. Who ever told you to install it is an idiot who know nothing about Macs.

This started as agonizingly slow Photo uploads.  Now I see I have bigger problems.  I crashed a 5 year old MacBook Pro a month ago and hijacked my husbands almost never used laptop.  Moved everything, and ended up with this...

    Would appreciate any thoughts.

everything is backed up on an external...

Get rid of Google Chrome.  It's taking up much of your memory and you're getting many processes killed due to memory pressure.  Another reason to get rid of Chrome and other Google apps is this: Google Chrome Listening In To Your Room Shows The Importance Of Privacy Defense In Depth.  Remove all Google add ons as shown in the Etrecheck report.

You model can use up to 16 GB of memory.  The only two suppliers of Mac memory I'll recommend are Crucial.com and otherworldcomputing.com.  Both guarantee their modules will work with Macs and have excellent customer support and warranty policies.  I'd upgrade to a minimum of 8 GB, more depending on the budget.

    Thanks Old Toad

Ummm, the Chrome things is a little scary.  If I upgraded to 18 or 6GB, do you think this is a better option than getting new.  Everything I do is very photo heavy, etc.

Thanks so much.  I really appreciate the help.

I believe that if you got two additional 4 GB modules and uppped your rame to a total of 12 GB you would see a noticeable  increase in performance.

What sort of photo work are you doing?

I'm a travel writer, so everything I do is photo heavy and this laptop is working really hard.

I backup regularly, use dropbox for things I need access to asap, but I'm wondering if my photo work is what finally did my other laptop in (granted it was 5 years old, but had bigger memory, etc.).  <sigh>

Thanks so much.  Is this a job for the Apple store or ?  I should be back in the States in the next few weeks and could have it done then.

If you're going to up the RAM I'd order it yourself and when you get home install it as it's quite easy.  There are Apple documents on how to install RAM in MPBs: MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support

If you have Apple do it will cost nearly double than what you can do it yourself. Here's what the various upgrades will cost from Crucial.com

    Screen Shot 2015-06-28 at 9.38.56 AM.jpg

For much more speed, especially in booting up and launching apps, replace your hard drive with a SSD drive.  Crucial and otherworldcomputing.com both offer drives.  But their installation requires an Apple Authorized Service Provider to do the installation.  An Apple company store will not install 3rd party drives.

In addition to removing MacAfee software as Allen recommended I suggest you rethink using Google Chrome as your browser.  One reason is this article: Google Chrome Listening In To Your Room Shows The Importance Of Privacy Defense In Depth.  Google software is known for "phoning home" with user's data as this article points out: Google Photos may be free — but there's still a cost

    Adding more memory will help.

Old Toad - Please help. Going crazy here - about to toss the **** Imac overboard! Photos is unusably slow.

I am running all Apps from an aftermarket SSD installed in the slot that used to hold the DVD drive - never been a problem and I dont think it is now - just thought  I'd mention it .

I Use the original internal hard drive for data - so my old iphoto and new photos libraries are on the hard drive.
