Unable to Link iPod 5thG Touch to AV Receiver Pioneer VSX-2016AV-S

My iPod Touch is 5th Gen 32GB running iOS 8.3.5 and connected to iTunes 11.4 (on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.8.5). I have a newly purchased Pioneer VSX-2016AV-S.

I manually used iTunes to transfer and play a few songs onto the iPod. The iPod plays music just fine.

On the Pioneer, I press and engage "iPod" and that button lights up "red," signaling that it is engaged to accept an iPod connection. While the iPod and AV Receiver are "on", I connect the iPod using the Lightening to USB male cable (the cable works just fine and I use it to connect to my MacBookPro) on the USB port of the Pioneer VSX-2016AV-S.

Problem: The Receiver says "No Connection" and fails to link to the iPod.

Things I have tried:

1. Re-starting both devices.

2. Unplugging and re-plugging both devices.

3. Based on prior comments about improper linking with an AV Receiver, I re-set the iPod by pressing the "Home" and "On/Off" button for about 10 seconds until the Apple sign appeared.

4. The receiver's instructions say nothing about a "no connection" error.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

Vinit

On these types of receiver, the USB connection is considered an input. Same as a DVD player, CD player, tv feed etc.

If the receiver does not automatically sense the iPod has connected, it probably needs to be manually selected as an input device. Select the USB input from either a receiver button or the receiver's remote control. When you see 'USB' on the receiver screen, start playing your iPod. Volume levels may be very different. Set iPod to 3/4 volume then adjust receiver volume.

If your receiver has AirPlay feature, no cable is required when Airplay selected on receiver and iPod.

Try:

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Done

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore from backup. See:

iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Does Pioneer say it will work with a 5G iPod with iOS 8.1.3?

Some older docks are not compatible with iOS devices with a Lightning connector. Also, sometimes an iOS update breaks compatibility.

The manual, page 49 says

http://docs.pioneer.eu/Manuals/VSX_2016AV_S_ARB7355_manual/

just says compatible with the 3G iPod and later. That likely means it was not tested with a Lightning iOS device.

The manual also mentions special cable that has a 30-pin connector

Thank you for your prompt and thorough response.

I did try first to restore the device through the Reset All Settings. Did not work.... however, there is a relevant reason why:

I do not have that special cable, and was merely trying to connect to the front USB port, which was my error, thanks to your insightful comment. Second, I cannot locate anywhere that such a cable may be purchased, possibly eBay.... Third, even if I had that cable, it may not be compatible, i.e., I called Pioneer and verified that they could not confirm compatibility with iPod Touch.

However, the problem is solved, thanks to Pioneer's Rep that suggested connecting the iPod's headphone jack 3.5mm cable to a RCA-male adapter cable, to send an analog audio signal into the back of the device.

Thank you!
