what happens when I set a passcode on my laptop when it is stolen?

I lost my macbook pro at school on april 25th 2015 and I am trying to track it. I went to the police department to tell them about the incident. I am currently trying to track it down. Today I was notified that it made a noise which means that someone had gotten into it and the passcode I set for it is activated. I have a passcode on my lost macbook pro, does that mean it cannot be tracked?

Lock your Mac
You can use Find My Mac to remotely lock your Mac with a passcode. You can also display a custom message on its screen. If you lock your Mac, you won’t be able to track it.

Erase your Mac

You can use Find My Mac to remotely erase and delete all your personal information from your Mac. If you erase your Mac, you won’t be able to track it.

Unless you had a firmware passcode set on the Mac someone can use the Mac by erasing/replacing the HD.

Ok thanks. Is it possible to remove the the 4 digit passcode that locked my laptop through iCloud? Do you recommend that I do that? I want to be able to track it.

No, you can't unlock it via iCloud. You have to have the device and enter the passcode.
