Q: iMac and MacBook Pro slow/issues after Yosemite

So....I held off. After months of resisting the urge to install Yosemite and also upgrade my iPhone and iPad to the most current OS, I gave in and all I can say is, "Why?"

In any event, there are a few glitches in the iPad and iPhone, both of which I can live with. HOWEVER, my iMac and my MBP have issues.

BOTH are dreadfully slow, both have the beach ball spin at times, and both have issues on Safari retrieving Gmail, especially after sleep. If I try to get my mail, or actually log into another site, I get a huge lag and often have to shut Safari and reopen, or switch to another browser, which mostly works but not always.

I have Apple Care and 1:1. After trying a whole bunch of stuff...reset PRAM, etc....I called Apple Support and that gal I spoke with said I should restart in Recovery Mode and reinstall the OS. Hmmmm. Sure, I can, but I honestly did NOT have any confidence in her knowledge or advice.

Any thoughts? Should I reinstall the OS? Will that be of issue??

Hmm. I wondering if that is the culprit. The TM is an older one. It's 'flat', whereas the newer ones are 'tall'. In any case, I do seem to have an issue after the computers sleep and then wake up. The wireless bars often take a moment to show the connection and checking Gmail right after that on Safari often says "Loading", "Still Working", and sometimes a "007" error. After that, it generally works.

I'll give it a try, but how do I reset it? Do I just unplug it and then plug it back in? Will I have to redo or change any of the settings or Network preferences? I'm pretty 'green' with that stuff, too.

That's one way. You can also restart it remotely in the AirPort Utility application.

By the way, is there also perhaps a Firmware update for the Time Capsule? The info on it says version 7.6.4. I'm thinking that is the current Firmware version. Am I correct or out in left field?

See pages 28 and 29. Using Airport Utility (page 29), I don’t see the options the manual says are there. I have done a reset and a full reset (page 28) many times and it has always straightened out the Time Capsule.

I restarted the Time Machine. Seems to not be any better. If I put either computer to sleep for a bit and wake them up, the WiFi connects (though not instantaneously....you see the pie shaped bars getting darker with each second), and then if I try to get my mail on Safari, I get the same "Loading" message/lag. Also, other website loading is either very slow or I get a 'Server Error'. Then, in a few minutes, it all seems to work okay, though I did not have those issues in Mavericks.

Any other thoughts? Should I try to disconnect the Time Machine and just go straight from the DSL Router to the iMac to see if there's a difference? Do you think I should upgrade to a new Time Machine or increase my DSL speed? Right now, we have a 6MB plan, which was fast in its day but no longer. I do see some issues in streaming video now and then.

Well....the difference I see initially is that I don't have to wait for the WiFi to connect. I'm connected immediately after wake up from sleep and it seems that I can get my Gmail without the issue. However, I only tried it a few times and needed to put the WiFi back for the other computer, my husband's PC, iPad, and iPhone WiFi.

I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to 1) upgrade my DSL speed and 2) get a newer Time Machine. I can look into both of those things. But I'm not sure that that will make the computers themselves as fast as they were prior to Yosemite or eliminate the beach ball I get at times. Thoughts?

Was there anything in the Terminal results that might be of issue? Ditto in the etresoft results (though I did that on my MBP, which has the same problems).

As an aside, after the upgrade, the iMac has the Macintosh HD icon on the desktop AND also 2 others, Macintosh HD with the little arrow and Macintosh HD alias, also with the little arrow. That didn't happen on the MBP. Can I simply trash those alias?

And, finally, the tech at Apple that I spoke with said I should reinstall Yosemite from the Recovery Disk. Do you think I should do that and is there any consequence to reinstalling Yosemite over the existing one? I'm really trying not to do an erase and install, i.e. starting from scratch. FYI, when I upgraded, I did have an issue with the final installation stopping on the iMac, but I read some posts on the Discussion Board and it said to just restart the computer and Yosemite will have been installed.

Was everything OK while you were directly connected to the modem, bypassing the TC?

Hmm. Not sure. Seemed better for Gmail on Safari, but I only had it rigged up that way for a very short time. Let me play with this tomorrow and get back to you with more info. Thanks again.
