16 GB Memory upgrade for mid 2010 13 inch macbook pro 7.1

My 2010 MacBook Pro 13 inch, model 7.1 is running on Maverick OS X 10.9.5. on the standard 4 GB RAM.

I am trying to upgrade to 16GB of RAM, but the computer does not boot with 16 GB Memory installed. It does boot with 10 GB (a new 8 GB card and an old 2GB card)

Can anyone tell me what I must do to get my MacBook Pro to accept the 16 GB upgrade?

Would installing Yosemite make a difference?

Thank you very much for your reply.

I did not respond sooner as I was doing a clean installation of OS X Yosemite on a new 1 TB SSD and I thought to again try the two (2) 8GB Crucial upgrade cards after the installation of Yosemite. I had been able to get up to 10 GB with one of the two Crucial and one of the 2GB original SIM Cards.

I was thinking that maybe my Firmware was not up to date on my previous OS X platform (Mavericks).

Yosemite made no difference and I have now ordered from OWC and shall return the Crucial SIMs.

Thanks for your prompt response to my query.

I purchased 2 8GB Memory Upgrade cards from OWC and these worked perfectly without me having to do anything else.

My Mid 2010 -12 inch MacBook Pro is running with OWC 16 GB RAM, a 1TB Samsung SSD, and is now flying with Yosemite at the speed of "light" - Not "sound." (:-))

Better than new when purchased 4 and a half years ago.

Hope this is helpful to other MacBook Pro owners out there!
