Keynote not opening .ppt file

Currently using Keynote 6.5.3

Tried to open an old Powerpoint presentation (.ppt), but consistently getting a message saying ".....ppt can't be opened". Sent the file to a pc, opened it in Powerpoint and converted to .pptx, then resent to my macbook and opened fine.

My understanding was that Keynote should open files with extension .ppt?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Keynote does open .ppt files, Im currently editing a PowerPoint presentation I created ten years ago in Keynote without any issues.

The conversion process is not perfect, fonts in particular can cause problems, Keynote and PowerPoint use different effects and tools and unexpected results can occur. Your method by converting to the XML version is a good workaround.

As far as im aware the new keynote will only open pptx (the new powerpoint) format this compatibility chart from apple seems to only suggest pptx is supported:

In fact the last three substantive versions of Keynote (versions 5.3, 6.2.2 and 6.5.3) all open and edit .ppt file type. Again I make the point that the conversion process is not a perfect.
