How to add keywords to photos using the iPad photos app?

45 years after I was adding keywords to digital photos at MIT, you still can’t do it on an iPhone or iPad

Apple has really dropped the ball with Photos. I’m in the market for a new system and the handling of photos is my main use. I like Apple but am very disappointed. I may move to Google‘s Picasa, Cloud, etc. Perhaps Apple just doesn’t care about Photos.

I believed iCloud Photo managment was the solution for me and was about to start a major iCloud-account. Hoped to categorize and organize my photos on my iPad at my leisure, with all the convienience of iPad and other iOS software. I now cancelled those plans.

You'll hardly be moving to Picasa as that's dead for years. Check out Mylio.

As far as I know, there is no way to add keywords using the native Photos App. There are third party apps that will do what you want (just do a search).

You can Favorite Photos and sort into different albums you create though.

Altbough the third party app (link below) has many features, I can't find one that will allow you to tag photos between iOS & OS X. Using iCloud Photo Library you can have access to all of your photos across your devices but sadly Smart Albums created in the Photos App on your Mac do not currently sync to the Cloud.

As of now the photos app will not let you add keywords to photos using the ipad or iphone. Also, even if you add keywords yourself in another application or from another computer, and then put them in the icloud photo library, you can't search using them on the iphone or ipad. This is something that I would really use and I've sent the request twice as enhancement to the photos app. I'm beginning to wonder if anyone on the team for the photos app are avid photographers!

This is a major flaw in Photos. There is an iOS app called PhotosInfo Pro that will allow you to add keywords to photos. When you are done, you can view the EXIF info for the photo and the keywords are there. You can import the photos into Lightroom Mobile and the keywords are there. You can import the photos into Google Photos and the keywords are there. However when the photos are synced to your desktop Photos app via the iOS Photos app, the keywords do not show up. Conversely, if you add keywords via the desktop Photos app, the keywords do not appear in the EXIF data on your iOS device.

This lack of metadata searching and editing is perhaps the stupidest design decision I have seen the company make. Let's see how can we make the Mac and iPhones LESS usable? Hmmm... We'll take away the existing ability to find or identify photos. Great move Tim. I've been advocating Apple machines since the first Mac "Classic" was released but this and the total lack of user friendliness in capability, programming, and plain simple imagination seems to have died with Jobs. What a shame.

Agreed! This totally needs to be fixed. We need to be able to add Keyword Tags, change Metadata, and create Photobooks and Calendars. My 2 cents
