Q: My MacBook Pro 13" keeps on randomly restarting

Hello Everyone,

I have been a Mac user for the last 20 years and this is my very first own post in an internet forum whatsoever as up to now I could always solve issues by reading through others' posts - but this time no chance so help me out, please :-)

Used to run Mavericks when for no apparent reason my MacBook Pro 13" (Late 2011; internal SSD system drive plus internal HDD with user data) over a period of several months the Mac tried to shutdown, particularly while watching movies with an external hard drive. Later on running still Mavericks and but also now after updating to Yosemite (10.10.3.) the Mac restarts, particulary when I am not using the computer. Same phenomenon whether simply leaving it alone, putting it in sleep mode, or leaving it alone but keeping it busy playing music with iTunes, for example.

Actually, it seems to be not a "real restart" but some sort of crash because I never here the restart sound when I am around. Furthermore, sometimes after opening the lid of my Mac I can very shortly see the (in my own words) password login field for the current user (as expected) and immediately after that I can see the (in my own words) selection menu for all users with none logged in (as if I the Mac had just started up).

I used to think it might be caused by my USB-Hub - Belkin Mobile HiSpeed USB, 2.0 Hub (7 Ports, active) but it is the same phenomenon whether this or any other USB devices or external screen or power plug are connected or not.

Already reset the SMC according to https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT3964 without success.

Also, I have come across MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/ but Apple told me 13" machines technically cannot be affected by the cause described here.

Please take a look at the several Diagnostic Reports collected since March 18, 2015 (small selection only) here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wwtz1tpzoo876ek/My%20MacBook%20Pro%2013%22%20keeps%20o n%20randomly%20restarting%20LOGS.rtf?dl=… Someone told me according to the logs the problem is caused by the graphic card some way or other. The person suggested to reinstall the whole system but I would prefer not to.

Any ideas please!!!???

Thanks a lot in advance!

I agree that the log entries parallel those of MBPs with failed/failing graphics cards but, like you, was not expecting it in a 13-incher. The list of models in the Apple article are indeed the "usual suspects."

If Apple will not extend the coverage to your computer and if you live in the US, request a "depot repair." Instead of working on the computer in an Apple Store with overnight service, they send the computer to a central refurbishment facility where they go though the comptuer and fix or replace anything they find wrong for a flat fee, excluding cosmetic damage. The last quote I heard for this service was about US$315 plus shipping and applicable local taxes..

The ONLY downside is that it takes about one working week. Not a bad sacrifice to get what will essentially be a new computer inside. Everyone who has taken advantage of this option and posted here says they were 100 percent satisfied with the repair.

Have been having the same issue. Only started after one of the last updates to the OS. Then I reinstalled the OS. Clean install. First panic started today.

Took it to the Genius bar, everything passed tests. I was getting some screen flickering as well. Not the whole screen, just some random bars that would show up and flicker. SO based on my panic, maybe it isn't the graphics card, maybe it is the memory?

    Thanks for your quick reply.

I talked to Apple (Austria) and they will definitely not extend the coverage to a MacBook Pro 13" because they say in the 13" version there is a different graphic system which is not causing this problem (if I understand correctly, there is not even a separate graphic card in the 13" version but it is integrated in the main board?).

If there was something like a "depot repair" over here in Europe I would maybe give it a try, provided there is no other solution to this problem.

In OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Supp… it says "In most cases, kernel panics are not caused by an issue with the Mac itself. They are usually caused by software that was installed, or a problem with connected hardware". As the problem persists without any hardware connect I am kind of hoping someone might give me a hint regarding a software bug or something like that.

It is very annoying that I cannot even create TimeMachine backups any more: The current backup process needs to save 96GB but the computer always restarts before finishing the backup process!

    Any other suggestions?

Have been having an issue regarding screen flickering, too. Not just some random bars but flickering and "snow" on the whole screen for several seconds a couple of times a day. Only on the external screen when connected, though, internal screen is fine. And not sure if this is really caused by the computer or bad/old house electricity (it happens whenever I turn on the oven oder someone in the house is using a drilling machine)...
