Not sure what you mean by "synch" but an iPhone will not pair via Bluetooth to a computer (Mac or Windows) or an iPad except for personal hotspot and then only if your cellular plan supports it. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7722
If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204678
Thanks for this. The devices used to be paired under the Bluetooth function I then inadvertently told the iPhone 5 to "forget this device" under the Bluetooth settings. I don't seem to be able to restore the settings to allow them to pair again. It won't recognise the iPad now even when they are not to each other and both are searching under the bluetooth function.
What is it that you are trying to accomplish by pairing them?
When I am out of wifi range, I would run my iPad off my iPhone cellular connection, which saved me $
OK. That is personal hotspot and that is supported and should work as long as it is supported by your cellular plan. Have you turned Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot to on before attempting to pair? There may be something in the following that will help: iOS: Troubleshooting Personal Hotspot - Apple Support
